Things To Do in Denmark

Denmark

Denmark is a small country with a cultural influence that far exceeds its size. The New Nordic food movement originated here and reshaped the way the world thinks about Scandinavian cuisine. Copenhagen is consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the world, with a quality of public space, cycling infrastructure, and cultural provision that sets a standard other cities try to emulate. Aarhus, Denmark's second city, has a strong cultural scene and a university that gives it a youthful energy. The country's design culture, architectural quality, and approach to social life are each worth paying attention to.

Live Music

Denmark has a lively and varied music scene that reflects the country's position at a crossroads between Scandinavian, British, and Continental European cultural influences. The jazz tradition runs deep in Copenhagen, with dedicated clubs and an internationally respected festival that has been drawing major artists for decades. Danish pop has produced artists of significant international reach, and the domestic music scene supports a wide range of genres from folk and roots music to electronic, rock, and hip-hop. The Roskilde Festival, held annually over a long weekend in late June or early July about 30 kilometres from Copenhagen, is one of the most respected music festivals in Europe: a not-for-profit event that donates its surplus to charitable causes and programs with genuine breadth and quality.

Nightlife

Copenhagen has a strong and varied nightlife scene that benefits from relatively liberal licensing and a public that takes going out seriously. The Vesterbro neighbourhood, historically a working-class and red-light district, has transformed into one of the most interesting areas in the city, with a dense concentration of bars, restaurants, and cultural venues in a small area. Norrebro has a more multicultural and alternative character. The area around Kobmagergade in the city center supports a mainstream bar and club circuit. Danish craft beer culture is among the strongest in the world: Danish breweries including Mikkeller have had significant international influence, and the domestic tap room and bar culture reflects a genuine sophistication about beer.

Design, Culture, and Architecture

Denmark's contribution to design, architecture, and craft is remarkable for its consistency and influence. Danish furniture design from the mid-20th century established an international standard for combining beauty and usability that continues to influence products across every category. Contemporary Danish architecture is respected globally, with practices including Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) producing buildings that are discussed and visited internationally. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, located in a spectacular coastal setting north of Copenhagen, is one of the most visited art museums in Europe and integrates the building, the art, and the landscape in a way that is genuinely unique. Copenhagen's National Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek add depth to a cultural landscape shaped by centuries of Danish civic investment. The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, about 30 kilometres from Copenhagen, houses five original 11th-century ships and is one of the finest Viking Age heritage sites in the world.

Food and Drink

The New Nordic food movement that began in Copenhagen around 2005 has had an influence on global restaurant culture that is difficult to overstate. The combination of foraging, local sourcing, fermentation, and a focus on Nordic ingredients that characterised the movement has been adapted by chefs in dozens of countries. Copenhagen today has more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than almost any other city in the world, and the range of dining from street food to fine dining is exceptional. Traditional Danish food including smorrebrods (open-faced sandwiches) remain a central part of daily eating and are executed with real skill by good practitioners. Danish pastries are genuinely excellent and available at bakeries across the country at any time of day. Craft beer from Danish breweries, including Mikkeller, has influenced beer culture globally and is available in dedicated tap rooms and craft bars throughout Copenhagen and the major cities.

Cycling, Sport, and Outdoor Life

Copenhagen is the most bicycle-friendly city in the world by most measures: cycling infrastructure, cycling mode share, and the degree to which cycling is integrated into everyday life for all ages and social groups all set a standard that other cities study and try to replicate. This cycling culture extends naturally into recreational cycling and sportive events. Football is the primary spectator sport, with FC Copenhagen and Brondby IF having large and active supporter cultures. The Tour de France has started in Denmark, and cycling as a spectator sport draws large crowds when major races pass through the country. Handball is a sport in which Danish teams have achieved remarkable international success, particularly in women's handball where the national team has been dominant.

Festivals and Events

Denmark's festival calendar is rich for a country of its size. The Roskilde Festival is the centerpiece, drawing around 130,000 people annually and maintaining a reputation for programming quality and social purpose that makes it distinct from most large commercial music events. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July brings jazz performances to venues, squares, streets, and courtyards across the city for ten days, making it one of the most pervasive urban music festivals in the world. Northside in Aarhus is an increasingly respected alternative to Roskilde with a strong environmental commitment. CPH:DOX, the Copenhagen international documentary film festival, is one of the most important events in the documentary film calendar. Aarhus European Capital of Culture in 2017 generated a lasting cultural infrastructure that continues to generate events.
